        3 years of speciality in copy of old manuscripts with Mr. Vernette

Copy an old manuscript.
The replacement by a copy of an original document which is damaged, destroying itself or which obviously will worsen can be the only solution when an operation of restoration does not have priority or is unrealizable because of its cost, the qualified staff shortage or the inexistence of a suitable treatment.
The copy carried out, the original can be:

(a) locked up carefully in a conditioning neutral and put at the shelter under optimal climatic conditions until we found an economic treatment: that is appropriate perfectly for the documents damaged but sometimes also with the documents which are not entirely degraded and whose deterioration can be stopped or slowed down by their conservation under good conditions;

(b) given up with its fate without one losing the hope however to find a means of economic treatment before it is not completely destroyed; or

(c) eliminated - although it is not the solution which readily an archivist adopts, it happens that it is most reasonable; in many cases, it is the inevitable result of the solution (b).

Copy to avoid damage which would have to be repaired.
In this case, substitution is a preventive measure to avoid damaging well preserved but fragile documents, in good condition but prone to a use or intensive handling or of the documents of a very great intrinsic value. In such a case, the originals must be preserved and stored in the suitable buildings.

In the case of a document having a great intrinsic value (a enluminé old manuscript, the national constitution or an entirely written letter of the hand of a historical character illustrates for example), the best substitute is a facsimile of good quality.
